New York City OperaStudent Ovations is the only program through which student orchestras and choruses have the opportunity to study, rehearse, and perform with some of the foremost conductors, instrumentalists and singers in the world with New York City Opera at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. Pro Musica is the only specialty tour operator in New York that is staffed by both experienced travel professionals and professional performing artists. This unique combination of experience allows us to provide your group with exclusive opportunities not available from other tour operators, including this exclusive program.

How does Student Ovations work?

Orchestras and Choruses travel to New York with Pro Musica Tours and participate in a customized itinerary, the highlight of which is the study, rehearsal and performance of excerpts from a selected opera on stage at Lincoln Center.  New York City Opera provides your group with an extensive pre-tour preparation package, including orchestra and/or chorus parts as well as detailed notes for musical preparation.  Pro Musica custom designs your tour around the Student Ovation program, based on your group’s interests and preferences.  School groups stay in New York for a minimum of four days, but may extend their visit to include a wide variety of supplemental activities including day tours and additional performances on Broadway, at Carnegie Hall, and at Lincoln Center.

What does the Student Ovation program include?

Although every school receives a customized program, all Student Ovations include:

  • A pre-tour preparation package including all musical parts and detailed preparation notes from the Artistic Director. Music includes major ensembles to be performed with principal singers from New York City Opera, as well as excerpts that can be performed independently once your group returns home.

  • Transportation to New York City, accommodations, and select meals.
  • A private tour of the world famous Juilliard school.

  • A full day of rehearsals back stage at Lincoln Center with New York City Opera music staff, including renowned conductors, coaches, instrumentalists and singers. This includes sectional rehearsals, full ensemble rehearsals, as well as private coaching for each teacher by the conductor leading each production.

  • On-stage/in the pit rehearsals with featured members of the opera’s cast.

  • A question and answer session with members of the cast and orchestra.

  • A performance of excerpts from the opera studied on stage at Lincoln Center for family and friends.

  • Prime location seating for a New York City Opera performance of your Ovation opera

Your group may elect to enjoy additional performances and day tours during your time in New York. You may also extend your time in New York.

When are Student Ovation programs available for groups?

How do I apply to participate in Student Ovations?

CarmenThe first step is to call our program coordinator, Justin Steensma, at (212) 541-5122 (Monday-Friday, 10AM – 6 PM Eastern Standard Time).  During this phone call, you should indicate which specific Ovation Program you are interested in. At this time, we will let you know if that program is still available, discuss your group’s supplemental interests, and can answer any of your questions.

The second step is to submit the Student Ovations application form and sample recording of your ensemble. Please click HERE to download this form. (You may find it useful to fill out this form prior to calling us.) Please print out this form, fill it out, and submit it with the requested ensemble recording for review by the Artistic Director of the program, George Manahan. Applications will be reviewed in the order they are received.

Once we have spoken to you and received your application form, we will be able to provide you with a preliminary proposal including pricing and a payment schedule. Pricing is based on the number of students participating, your supplemental activities, and your city of origin. Free Faculty/Chaperone tour packages are included for every participating group, usually at the ratio of 1 free package for every 20 participating students. Additional chaperones, as well as family members, may accompany the group at a discounted rate, based on your customized itinerary.

You will receive an acceptance decision within 7 days of our receipt of your materials.  Upon acceptance to the program, a deposit of $50 per person will be required within 21 days to secure your reservation.  We will work out a full payment schedule for each group based on your dates of travel.

Please note that the application deadline for Fall 2006 Ovation programs is May 15th, 2006. The application deadline for Spring 2007 Ovation programs is September 15th, 2006.  Application deadlines represent the latest date schools may apply, however, each Student Ovation program may be filled prior to deadline dates.  Interested schools are encouraged to contact our offices as early as possible.
